The first major battle of the American Civil War was fought on Wilmer McLean's farm at Bull Run, Virginia. Shaken, he moved his family 120 miles to the quiet village of Appomattox Court House. Four years later, General Lee surrendered to General Grant in McLean's parlor, ending the war. "The war began in my front yard," he said, "and ended in my parlor."
