On June 4, 1923, horse trainer Frank Hayes rode a 20-to-1 outsider named Sweet Kiss at Belmont Park. It was his first ever race. He suffered a fatal heart attack mid-ride, but his body stayed in the saddle as Sweet Kiss won by a head. Nobody realized he was dead until they went to congratulate him. He remains the only jockey known to have won a race posthumously.
