In 1871, Ohio lawyer Clement Vallandigham was defending a man accused of murder by arguing the victim had accidentally shot himself. To demonstrate this to colleagues in his hotel room, he grabbed a pistol he believed was unloaded and re-enacted the victim's movements. The gun fired into his abdomen and he died the next day. His demonstration was so convincing that his client was acquitted.
