During the fraught White Album sessions in August 1968, Paul McCartney criticized Ringo Starr's drumming and Ringo quit the Beatles. He took his family to Sardinia on a boat loaned by Peter Sellers. When the chef served octopus for lunch, Ringo refused to eat it. The captain told him octopuses collect shiny stones, bottles, and tin cans and arrange them like a garden outside their caves. Ringo wrote "Octopus's Garden" on the deck that afternoon. He was back in the Beatles two weeks later.
