In 897 AD, Pope Stephen VI had the corpse of his predecessor Pope Formosus dug up, dressed in full papal robes, and propped on a throne to stand trial. A teenage deacon was assigned to answer on behalf of the dead man. The corpse was found guilty, had three fingers cut off, and was thrown into the Tiber. The public rioted, and within months Stephen himself was imprisoned and strangled to death.
