On March 31, 1993, Brandon Lee, son of Bruce Lee, was filming a scene in which his character is shot in his apartment. The prop revolver had been loaded earlier with improvised dummy rounds made by removing the powder from live cartridges, but a bullet tip had separated and lodged in the barrel unnoticed. When Michael Massee fired the blank, the primer was enough to fire the stuck bullet at full velocity. Lee was hit in the abdomen and died twelve hours later, aged 28. Production finished The Crow using a body double and digital compositing.
