At the 1936 Berlin Olympics, Hitler's showcase for Aryan supremacy, Black American Jesse Owens fouled on his first two long jump attempts and was about to be eliminated. Then German athlete Luz Long, the embodiment of everything the Nazi regime was promoting, walked over and quietly advised Owens to adjust his approach. Owens qualified, then beat Long for the gold medal. Long was the first to congratulate him. They walked off the field arm-in-arm in front of Hitler and 100,000 spectators. Owens later said: 'You could melt down all the medals and cups I have, and they wouldn't be a plating on the 24-karat friendship I felt for Luz Long.' Long was killed in the war in 1943.
