Australian short-track speed skater Steven Bradbury had no business being in the 1000m final at the 2002 Salt Lake City Olympics. He had previously broken his neck in a training accident and been told he'd never skate again. In his semifinal, he was in last place when everyone ahead of him crashed, letting him through to the final. Then, in the final itself, the same thing happened. With two laps to go, he was well behind four elite skaters. On the last turn, all four wiped out in a spectacular pile-up. Bradbury, cruising safely in last place, simply skated past the carnage and crossed the finish line for Australia's first ever Winter Olympic gold medal. His name has since entered the Australian dictionary: 'Doing a Bradbury' means winning through sheer dumb luck.
